At the end of 2006 Alkaline Trio left Vagrant records and signed to V2 records
with a three album release deal the first of which is in the works and will
be released towards the end of 2007. In the mean time Alkaline Trio have
put together there final release for Vagrant records titled 'Remains' which
is basically a collection of b-sides songs, songs that have featured on
compilations and various ep's the band have worked on since being signed
to Vagrant.
Alkaline Trio did a similar thing back in 2000 when they left Asian Man
Records, they put out a self titled cd featuring unreleased and rare tracks
that the band recorded during their time with Asian Man Records and it’s
good to see they are saying good bye to Vagrant Records in the same kind
of way.
In between making 'From Here To Infirmary', 'Good Mourning' and 'Crimson'
Alkaline trio spent most of their time on the road promoting their albums
and also a lot of time in the studio recording songs for their split cd
release with Hot Water Music and also their split cd release with One
Man Army and various other bits and bobs.
'Remains' is a collection of 23 songs that Alkaline Trio has made over
the past five years. Remains starts off with 'Hell yes' which has just
been released as an exclusive 7" single. The song is about the late
Anton Lavey and is quite a fast and catchy song.
There are so many highlights on the cd such as the live favourite of
'Jaked on Green Beers' which has been taken from the 'Atticus Dragging
the Lake' compilation cd. Also 'Warbrain' which is taken from the hugely
successful 'Rock Against Bush' compilation album. Also, the biggest highlight
in my opinion is 'Queen Of Pain' which was recorded for the split cd with
Hot Water Music and is one of the best songs the band have ever recorded.
Their are also a few cover songs thrown in such as a cover of The Damned’s
'Wait For the Blackout', which originally appeared on the bands BYO split
cd with One Man Army. The same cd also brought us 'Sadie' which has since
appeared on Alkaline Trio's last full length album 'Crimson' and is now
on 'Remains'
The last few tracks on remains are live tracks of 'Deathbed', 'I’m
Dying Tomorrow' and a live acoustic version of 'My Standard Break From
Life' which were performed in Hollywood back in early 2006 and just showcases
how good alkaline Trio are live.
Also included on 'Remains' is a DVD which features all the bands videos
for the singles from all their Vagrant records releases. The DVD also
features the Remains of 2005/2006 which is basically a 45 minute video
of the band on the road with live and backstage footage of the band all
over the world on their Crimson world tour. The DVD also has a few bonus
features such as the making of the 'Burn' video.
This is a must buy package for old Alkaline Trio fans as it contains
every song you have probably got spread over twenty different compilation
cd’s all on one cd and the DVD footage is worth the money alone.
For new fans it’s a great way to start off getting into the band
with 22 tracks of dark, themed punk rock that weren’t good enough
to make their albums but are a lot better than what most bands are releasing
nowadays.
