Grinspoon - Six to MidnightGrinspoon - Six to Midnight

Aussie alternative rock sensations Grinspoon are back in force to prove to the haters they aren’t sell outs and still have the power to knock you off your feat. The band has had huge success in their home country of Australia but not really experiencing much success globally, in fact this is the first album to gain proper international release dates since their 2002 album “New Detention”. It’s been a while since 2002 and they’re now trying to get back into global touring so let’s have a look and see if their latest release will get them noticed here in the great land of Britain.

After giving it a few spins I can say that I really like it; it’s got a great range of varied material on it, they give you heavy shit, they give you really gentle songs and hit every octave between. “Run” is a good starting point, take some classic rock and whack that heavier distortion pedal on to give it some grit which works great with some of the twangy guitar sections the band likes to slot in. “Comeback” is the band making a statement about what people had been saying about them, “Don’t call this a comeback, it’s hardly a comeback if you’ve never gone” which then from its really gentle start spirals off into a 3 minute journey through mellow rock sing along.

“Summer” is a song that sticks out like a sore thumb, as it’s a completely different style, the rest of the songs have an initial base for a style then expands from that but this lacks that essential starting point. “Champion” follows this and then you’ll see what I mean, this is real aggression which to be fair is still a little out of place but I love it. The first half of the album was definitely a tighter collection of songs compared to haw the others match up, it’s also a lot more distinctive with “Takes One” which is the best song to listen to if you want to put together all the best things about Grinspoon’s sound and “Dogs” simply if you like heavy music.

After everything regardless of the songs that don’t fit, there are enough that do to make this album a success. I think if they haul their asses over here and really work at it they might actually make a name for themselves not only in the UK and Europe but also all over the world. Lads, just be careful of what material you put in your set list’s because it’s not only Australian fans that will call you sell outs.
