Ancient VVisdom - A Godlike InfernoAncient VVisdom – A Godlike Inferno

Texan band Ancient VVisdom have just released their debut full length studio effort “A Godlike Inferno” through Shinebox Recordings. Researching for information about the band online I’ve seen a quite confusing genre classification for the band – Black Metal Pop; what the hell does that mean? I’ve heard of pop metal but I mean Black Metal and Pop? Let’s get to the bottom of this.

There is nothing pop here at all so what the band mean by using that classification for themselves I will never know, what we do have here is some eerie folksy rock music with a heavy acoustic vibe, but it doesn’t end there oh no the lyrical work is definitely reminiscent of that associated with Black Metal mixed along with this haunting sinister sounding music. Now that I’ve properly described what the music actually sounds like I’ve got to say whether it’s actually work wasting 35 minutes of your time listening to.

If like me you’re the type of person that likes music to provoke energy or aggression then I will say that this album will not be for you; reason being that it feels just a bit too depressing and maybe a tad too sinister, calling themselves black metal was is a bit of a push because it’s far too light even though the feel and lyrical content is all there, I personally don’t really know many people myself that would enjoy this kind of thing. There are a couple of songs that aren’t so miserable that I can actually begin to enjoy and those are “VVorld of Flesh” and “Forever Tonight”, the thing with those 2 tracks is that they actually have decent electric guitar sections that uplift the track and give it some necessary filling.

I think the main things to bear in mind about the album are that it’s not upbeat at all; it’s heavily acoustic based and mostly suited to people who like sinister types of music, if that’s you then go for it and please let me know what you think. All I can say for definite is that the album was not for me even in the slightest, far too miserable and I do not intend to spend my spare time listening to stuff that’s going to bring my mood down and put me to sleep.
