When Britain’s punk scene was at its best
we had some of the most aggressive bands on the
planet that we could all proud of; if they could
see what the genre they fought for has become
with some of that “pop punk” dribble
that is the brand associated with artists like
Kids In Glass Houses and You Me At Six, they’d
wince and probably shoot themselves. Now I’m
not saying I don’t like some of the modern
punk rock artists I’m known for being quite
partial to a bit of Sum 41 or Blink 182 from time
to time but there’s not a single modern
British pop punk artist in my list. Enter Everything
We Left Behind; these Bristol based youngsters
show signs not of saving the genre, but giving
it a bit of dignity. Take Blink 182’scatchy
vocals and simple structures add to them the sheer
chaotic aggression of NOFX and there you have
EWLB’s debut album “Our Ears are Bleeding”
which I think is a message to all the crappy artists
lounging around our scene.
Opening track “Generica” I think is
the perfect song to show the comparisons that
I made, it’s a song that has a range in
vocal’s from heavy gritty to softer melodies
with backing music that ranges from distorted
aggression to clean twangy riffs, a perfect middle
ground between both Blink 182 and NOFX. “No
Friend Of Mine” is short crunchy track which
has a heavy hard rock vibe with the way the guitars
sound and the speed. The final track which is
also my personal favourite “It’s Not
Plagiarism, It’s Just Similar” is
a perfect message to all the whiny haters who’ll
sit and complain “It’s just a rip
off of what’s already been done” no
it isn’t it’s a combination of 2 already
existing styles which gives a dignified middle
ground to modern punk rock.
If you’re a Blink 182, Sum 41 or NOFX fan
then I’d get hold of this CD as it could
be something you’d thoroughly enjoy and
hell even if you like You Me At Six or Kids In
Glass House’s I strongly urge you to listen
to some decent punk rock, I joke obviously people
have their own opinions but seriously, check this
shit out.
