I first got into Brand New back in 2003 when they released their second
studio album 'Deja Entendu' which was one of the best albums I had heard
that year, it was massive in sound, full of randomly named songs and had
some strange music videos to back the songs up. Three years since the release
of 'Deja Entendu', Brand New are back with their hugely anticipated third
studio album 'The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me'.
Brand New have always said they never want to make an album sound the
same or similar to one of their previous albums. The bands debut album
'Your Favourite Weapon' was very pop/punk/emo sounding, the follow up
album 'Deja Entendu' saw Brand New totally change their sound ditching
the pop-punk sound and sounding more hardcore and was one of the best
album releases that year. The bands third album release 'The Devil and
God are Raging Inside Me' once again sees the band change their sound
to a more rocking sound, the album is mellow but hectic with a lot of
eerie background sounds
The album opens up with the stunning 'Sowing Season' and is the only
song that slightly reminds me of the bands previous album 'Deja Entendu',
the song starts off really quietly but soon into it Jesse Lacey breaks
into hardcore screams and throughout the whole song the vocals change
from whisper like vocals to hardcore screams proving what music geniuses
Brand New really are.
'Millstone' is the perfect track to chill out to and takes Brand New
on a different direction than what we have heard before. The music is
very toned down and Jesse delivers a mixture of sung and softly whispery
vocals.
'Jesus Christ' is my favourite track on the album, it’s quite a
mellow track like 'Millstone' with its very distant toned down music which
give Jesse a chance to shine with his vocals and also shows how mature
the band how come with their lyrics.
'Degausser' starts off slowly with some eerie guitar sounds which slightly
picks up in pace when the vocals come in and shortly you hear a choir
of vocals with Jesses running a few seconds behind.
You get a spooky church funeral style feeling for the start of 'Limousine
(MS Rebridge)' which starts off so slowly, which easily leaves you imagining
people walking down the aisle in church. The song gets louder in sound
as it goes on but mellows down again and gets louder towards the end again.
Brand New are not afraid to experiment with their sound and are so good
at bringing a mixture of sound to each of their songs and that is what
makes Brand New better than the rest.
Half way through the album is an instrumental track called 'Welcome to
Bangkok' which starts off mellow and gets loud in sound with heavy guitar
riffs and constant drumming giving in a movie style feeling.
'Not the Sun' is a pretty catchy poppy emo sounding song that will stick
in your head for ages. The opening drum beats of 'The Archers Bows Have
Broken' show how good Brian Lane is as a drummer.
With 'The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me', Brand New have out done
anything they have ever done previously and outdone everything any band
has done in their genre making this one of the best albums I have heard
in a long time musically and lyrically. The three year wait was certainly
worth it.
