EP Review

††† - † EP††† – † EP

††† is a different little side project from the minds of musical geniuses Chino Moreno (Deftones), Shaun Lopez (Far) and Scott Chuck. With this particular project these musicians are taking an irregular approach to the way in which they operate; all their focus is solely into recording music, there are absolutely no plans of touring in the future and the material is being releasing free of charge. This EP † is available free from the bands Facebook at a low quality with the ability to obtain the full highest quality version for the low price of $5.

If any fans of the musicians previous work in other bands are expecting repeats or combinations of their different musical styles then you would be let down. Chino has always been involved in creating really trippy experimental music yet Deftones has always used the heavier side of the material song writing; Team Sleep, Chino’s other side project explored the side of his song writing that doesn’t require him screaming his face off or causing people to break things, this new band also takes that lighter approach but with a much different electronic dance approach.

Heavy beats, filled with electronics and quite absent of guitar work; the only tracks that really have anything to do with guitars are “Op†ion” and “†hholyghs†”, “Op†ion” has a thick distorted riff and “†hholyghs†” has a distinctive soothing yet sinister introduction. The guitars serve as merely toppings to this musical meal where the main body takes the most experimental softer side of Deftones (from more Saturday Night Wrist era) then push it a little bit further and that’s what we’ve been dealt here.

Its more music you could dance to or kick back with a doobie as opposed to break someone’s face, the beats are definitely something you’d hear in a dance club with the electronic sections that are amazingly soothing complimenting the soft alternating changes in Chino’s voice throughout the EP. It’s a drastically different approach to what we’re used to hearing from these musicians but surprisingly I do thoroughly enjoy this sound, I know that it’s hardly hard rock or metal and a lot of people will bitch and moan about that but this style of music is in very short supply as it’s quite unique, you have to listen to this EP with a very open mind.
