Ever since the original Taking Back Sunday line
up got back together I have been excited and eagerly
awaiting the band’s new album but a couple
of months ago they released ‘Faith (When
I Let You Down) as a special EP to give everyone
a taster of what to expect from the album and
I was quite disappointed mainly due to the fact
that they killed ‘Great Romances Of The
20th Century’ by reworking it in acoustic
format so ever since then I have been a bit cautious
of what to expect from the new studio album.
Well the bands self titled new album is now out
and I can confirm that it has been worth the wait,
it may not be as close sounding to their debut
album as myself and many fans had hoped for but
it is a solid album which features a diverse mix
of songs sounding similar to their debut and also
as heavy as ‘Louder Now’ in places.
The album opens with the beefy sounding ‘El
Paso’ which really does open the album with
an almighty thump, from the start the whole band
come together and create a sound which is going
to get the mosh pit moving in a mad frenzy and
the vocals of Adam Lazzara are so raw I imagine
throat sweets were his best friend for a few weeks
after.
‘Faith (When I Let You Down)’ is the
debut single to be released from the album and
the first time I heard it I really was not keen
but after listening to the song on and off for
a month or so whilst waiting for the album I have
actually grown to like it, the song is more in
the style of older Taking Back Sunday material
but still so far away from what I was hoping,
but in general it is a nice medium paced sing-a-long
song.
‘Best Places To Be A Mum’ is very
much like early Taking Back Sunday material and
is a really positive sounding song with a beautiful
catchy vibe running throughout. ‘Sad Savior’
is one of my favourite songs on the album and
it is a beautiful sounding ballad where Lazzara
really nails it with his unique vocals, but it
is ‘This Is All Now’ which really
captures the moments and is the song on the album
which you will find yourself listening to the
most as it is a beauty.
‘Who are You Anyway?’ features Lazzara
broadening his vocal range, it is a proper radio
friendly rocky song which features a full on classic
sounding Taking Back Sunday style chorus which
we have come to love over the years, whilst ‘Money
Let It Go’ is a full on dirty sounding rock
and roll song which features everything from raw
screams to more melodic sing-a-long vocals, banging
drums beats, bouncy basslines and full on beefy
guitar riffs.
Compared to the bands previous albums I would
say that the self titled is a big diverse mix
and it really helps make a really solid album,
it may not be the best ever Taking Back Sunday
album that many people was expecting but then
again it’s pretty silly to think Taking
Back Sunday could ever beat ‘Tell All Your
Friends’ as that album is the best emo album
ever.
