Now 3 Doors Down are a band I pegged made a living
off really soft depressing ballads which is why
I never gave them a chance. I caught them live a
month ago in Birmingham and they were debuting tracks
off their new album and I adored them; I got home
and acquired the new album and quite a lot of their
discography to be fair and I’ve got to say
I think the new album is their finest work.
Opening track “Time Of My Life” and
closing track “Believer” are absolute
gems, they’ve got a different feel to them
as opposed most of the other songs on the album.
The rest of the songs take on more of the ballad
structure where as these two are more upbeat rock
tracks with really catchy lyrics and “Believer”
is really fast paced and bouncy. The only other
tracks on the album that remotely take this kind
of style are “Round and Round” and
“My Way” but both of which are more
melodic with a slightly a softer approach.
Songs like “When You’re Young”
provoke emotion, by that I mean the lyrical content
and the really soft tones work at complimenting
each other to really get at your soul. It’s
the vocals of Brad Arnold that makes that effect
what it is, especially on song “Heaven”
and I think it’s because he gives off an
understanding and comforting tone in his voice.
This is just what they do best and is what most
of the album encompasses; “Back to Me”
is beautiful, “Everytime You Go” is
stupidly catchy, “On the Run” is pretty
bouncy, it just follows on through the album.
So how does it actually compare to their older
material? Well their back catalogue has been pretty
impressive but this album definitely possesses
the most refined and complete version of their
sound, one to be remembered for that’s for
sure.
