Edenshade - Stendhal Got That CloseEdenshade – Stendhal Got That Close

So Italian metallers Edenshade have been going for a long time now! Since forming in 1998 they have released 2 demos, 1 EP and this is their third album; they are labelled on the internet as a few different things, I’ve seen alternative metal, progressive metal and melodic death metal so first I must establish what type of music I’m actually dealing with here.

Straight away from opening track “Need” you can tell that there’s some big elements from progressive metal but its predominantly alternative metal. The riffs are quite technical and chunky; this gives it a very full sound which is always great, the transition from the quite heavy verses to the very melodic parts flow through one another beautifully never leaving you in a position where you cannot follow the songs. The vocals I’m finding hard to describe; I think the itallian accent is at work here but it sounds great alongside the music, fits in beautifully and especially in “Need” it just gives the song a bit of a sinister feel.

Some of their songs remind me of Essex based band Forever Never, especially “Seven Days are Gone” but this band have a much different approach to their music making it familiar yet exciting I think. “Everything I Painted You” really blasts you some amazing drumming, the double bass is terrific and not over used and just the sheer talent of the drummer in keeping the songs on course allowing those great riffs to just overlay perfectly.

“Caress” is a great song just for all the different changes if nothing else, the way you almost get lost in it because it captures your attention with its intricate riffs and changes in pace, “God is a Comedian” sucks you into it in exactly the same way and has arguably the best vocal lines in it to go along with it.

On the whole this is a terrific release and they would fit in extremely well on a tour with progressive metal bands. With any luck we’ll get them over here on a package filled with bands from that scene as Edenshade deserve some recognition for this release.
