Album Review
The Retrospective Soundtrack Players - Cool Hand LukeThe Retrospective Soundtrack Players – Cool Hand Luke

Exactly what you get on the tin; the album is a soundtrack album written to the film Cool Hand Luke, what you see really is what you get. The album was made by just 2 guys and a few friends helped them out and it’s basically like a folksy country style album which is increasing in popularity in today’s music culture.

The film is based around a man that is sent to prison and refuses to live the way you need to in prison so the lyrical content is all to do with life in prison; themes such as keeping a low profile, punishments for bad behaviour and escaping.

It reminds me at times of Johnny Cash but with more high pitched whiney vocals. Some of the songs are so beautifully reason and infectious it’s not even believable, so when the songs that aren’t particularly great come up you can’t help but think if they are being serious because they obviously can write great songs so they know what to do hence why are there terrible songs on it?

The worst song on the album is “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” the vocals on it make me physically wince due to the tones and really loud whiney high pitched sections it just offends my ears. Another 2 songs I don’t like are “Plastic Jesus 1” for the same reason I don’t like “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and I don’t like “Plastic Jesus 2” because its exactly the same as “Plastic Jesus 1” but sang differently and played differently, it’s just not that good a song.

Now let’s get onto a brighter note and talk about the great songs that are featured on the album. “Send Me the Hell Back Home” is an amazing song very upbeat and has that really cool violin in the background adding to the ambiance. 2 other great songs are “Real Cool Hand” and “A Man Can’t Eat Fifty Eggs!” which are quite upbeat and lively songs and have a great vibe.

All in all considering it was wrote really quickly and by 2 people this is quite an enjoyable album with equal shares of highs and lows. They’ve just got to make sure they keep the vibe going if they decide to release a second album and not changing their sound per different film because people listen to music by forming a bond to a bands own personal distinctive sound.
