It’s been far too long since Fred Durst and
Co have released an album, 6 years to be exact.
After their absolutely outstanding performance at
Download Festival 2009 and then appearing at Sonisphere
Festival 2010 the band are well and truly back and
already confirmed for Sonisphere Festival 2011.
To accompany they are finally releasing “Gold
Cobra” this coming week on June 26th.
To start with the album cover is rubbish, being
an illustration student at university and having
seen the artwork for the single I was completely
disappointed. However it’s not about the looks
now really is it? It’s about the glorious
return of Limp Bizkit and seeing if they’ve
still got it.
The first full length song on the album is called
“Bring It Back”, it’s a little
bit different to what I’ve heard from the
band before, much quicker rapping in it but with
a bloody great riff. I must say for the record first
time I listened to the album I didn’t really
like it but by the third listen I’m feeling
quite addicted. The title track however I’m
struggling to come to a decision on whether I really
like it or not it again is quite different and gives
off a much different vibe to most Bizkit material
in the way normally the songs are really bouncy
where as the vocals in the chorus to this song are
not upbeat and drag the song down.
The next 4 tracks are what you would expect Limp
Bizkit would put out; gritty rock, bouncy and extremely
catchy. “Shark Attack” is one of my
favourites it reminds me of “Break Stuff”
but not too similar and “Get a Life”
kind of reminds me of “Full Nelson”
as its got those screaming vocals in the chorus.
The first single from the album was “Shotgun”,
it was a terrific single as its “My Generation”
and “My Way”; the shotgun sounds are
really very effective in heavier type of music which
is exactly what they use to their advantage using
it to make a breakdown towards the end of the track.
“Autotunage” is a great song for a few
reasons; for a start the beginning completely rips
into pop artists that rape auto-tune on every song
they ever record, another reason is that it’s
a great rock track and the final reason is because
they find a way to use auto-tune in such a way that
it fits in with their music, proves the band can
put their sound to just about anything if they want
to.
On the whole it’s a great album, you have
to listen to it a few times before you can fully
get into it I think it’s just one of those
releases from a well established band that have
really hit songs that new material always has to
measure up to. Eventually you will see that it is
a pretty damn good release and just adds to the
bands already astounding back catalogue.
5/5
