Album Review

Depth - Situations FulfilledDepth – Situations Fulfilled

Depth are a 4 piece band from Norwich and I’ll be honest with you this isn’t going to be the best of reviews for the lads. They are too like funeral for a friend, almost an exact copy if I’m being totally honest; throw on “Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation” then this album “Situations fulfilled and there are so many similarities it’s not even subtle.

The song “The Story So Far” starts in a very similar way to “Bend Your Arms to Look like Wings” the way it has a little clean riff and then the vocals flow into the song and the riff and breakdown later on in the songs has FFAF written all over it as that too is extremely similar to the same song.

It really wouldn’t be so bad if FFAF hadn’t just released a cracking album in the same vain as their earlier stuff because then it would be Depth picking up on a sound that was lost once upon a time but however that Cinderella claim to fame isn’t going to happen because as I say, it’s just too similar.

The vocals are not exact but similar styles as well the music is extremely similar. It’s not like nobody knows who FFAF is they are a massive alternative rock band and have had a successful career. It’s not like I’m saying the band is bad because that’s like saying that FFAF aren’t good and I’m a massive fan but for an upcoming band to have no originality and be this similar to another band it’s going to annoy a lot of people; each time I listen to the album I get really agitated because of the similarities.

On some songs they show slight signs of original ideas like some decent riffs or breakdowns like in songs such as “Words Written” with use of some double bass and tremolo picking and the intro to “Hero With a Half Life” has a very dirty rock intro with use of a wah pedal. They need to focus on things the pull them away from being “the band that sounds like FFAF” and put as much of it into their next release as possible. All this album proves is that they can write and are talented musicians, now they’ve got to find an original style and try and put this behind them; I can’t see that happening I think they’ll continue to put out material like this and get ripped apart which is a shame really.
