Over the past year or so Taking Back Sunday have
been busy working on their fifth studio album
which happens to be their first album since their
debut t feature the original Taking Back Sunday
line up which could well explain why the band
have decided to go for a self titled album title
this time around, but as all Taking Back Sunday
fans wait patiently for the album’s release
which is currently scheduled for the 28th June,
the band have decided to release a mini three
track EP to help ease the pain and help the time
pass quicker for their fans.
The EP is titled ‘Faith (When I Let You
Down)’ and it kicks straight off with a
song of the same name, now I am not sure what
I was expecting from new Taking Back Sunday material
but sadly despite showing traces of the sound
from the debut album the song is still so far
away from it but on the plus song it is really
up beat and features some outstanding instrumental
moments and like normal Adam Lazzara’s vocals
are on top form.
The second track ‘El Paso’ is more
up my street it is a real heavy sounding track
which opens with a tub thumping drum beat before
the lyrics come in taking you on a slight melodic
ride until things proper kick off during the chorus
where Adam Lazzara screams his bollocks off before
returning to normality with his trademark soft
sounding vocals, the song very much reminds me
of later material from everyone’s favourite
Long Island band Brand New.
The third and final track on the EP is an acoustic
version of ‘Great Romances Of The 20th Century’,
now I am a proper sucker for acoustic music and
really love the original version of the song which
seems to be my anthem as I stop through the tube
stations and generally around London on a Monday
morning but sadly the acoustic version of the
track does it no justice at all and Adam Lazzara’s
vocals in an acoustic environment are shocking,
the backing vocals are not much better but somehow
better than those of Lazzara’s, I can understand
why Taking Back Sunday have decided to rework
an classic track to show they are trying their
best to return to their roots but acoustic music
is something they should stay well away from in
the future.
When I first heard that the original Taking Back
Sunday line up had reunited I was excited as ‘Tell
All Your Friends’ is one of my favourite
albums of all time, but after hearing this EP
I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed
and really hope that the album features better
moments than this EP.
