Angelus Apatrida is a Spanish band that recently
got themselves a deal with Century Media Records
and released their 3rd album but debut for Century
Media “Clockwork”. The style of this
album is thrash metal but with a difference; they
started out as a heavy metal/power metal band
and you can hear that they have carried elements
of this forward into their new found thrash metal
style making it stand out, as well as some more
modern day rock and metal styles.
They take all of the modern day tricks and styles
and add them to old school metal styles bringing
them forward into the modern age and it’s
a god damn good idea! It’s infectious and
catchy which is something I was not expecting
when I saw the genre as thrash metal; I was expecting
a Spanish version of a Slayer rip off but I’m
extremely glad I was wrong.
Some of the tracks like “The Misanthropist”,
“Devil Take The Hindmost” and “Legally
Brainwashed” have some huge metal influences;
screaming vocals and some of the musical sections
are just purely took from a deep modern day metal
influence with palm muting and triplets. Whereas
“Blast off”, “Of Men and Tyrants”
and “Clockwork” take on the majority
of the thrash and heavy metal influences in their
style mostly with the vocals and the pace of the
music.
Then another few tracks take on the power meal
influence; “Into the Storm”, “National
Disgrace” (Which the vocals are similar
to Dave Mustaine) and “Be Quick or Be Dead”
(their Iron Maiden cover) and in this case its
mostly the guitar work that gives it the power
metal feel. It’s always only slight changes
in 1 or 2 sections that drift them between different
genres, Angelus Apatrida specialise in this making
their material very varied yet recognisable.
Quite frankly there is something in here for everyone,
they have taken some old genres and gave them
a new life in their material which could bring
it back into it back into style for the youth
of today. I would recommend this to anyone who
likes thrash, heavy metal, power metal or just
metal as a genre on a whole. exceptional stuff
here from the Spaniards hope they play it good
live and decide to get over here soon.
