Desert Storm are apparently from Oxford in South
England UK but have a sound like they’re
hailing from the Deep South of America. Having
formed 4 years ago and toured the UK vigorously
the band takes on the brand of Southern rock with
heavy blues rock integration making for some damn
groovy rock tracks. They take what bands like
Clutch and Down do but the vocals are grittier
and the riffs are played with a bit more crunch;
for the most part anyway.
The band try to cover too much ground with this
release in the way that there are some really
soft tracks and some extremely heavy then a majority
in-between but they don’t feel like they
flow between one another.
The first 2 tracks “Cosmic Drips”
and “Ol’ Town” see the band
establish the southern rock edge that I’ve
been talking about with blues infusion and some
big dirty riffs and chord sequences, feels very
Clutch influenced indeed. Then the third track
“South We Roll” hits and blows the
previous tracks away; it’s an extremely
heavy song, I feel some definite metal influence
in here and it does not match the style set by
the previous tracks even the vocals or of a different
style so it’s hard to see what they want
to do “The Jackal” and “Smokes
‘N’ Liquor” take this approach
but not quite as heavy.
You can see they obviously follow the direction
with the southern vibe but unlike the most famous
bands; like Clutch for example, they are always
consistent the vocals the music everything you
will always know its Clutch but Desert Storm are
trying to cram too many different types of song
into one album. “Forked Tongues” is
just strange, they try and take the metal side
and mix it with the way they approached the first
tracks and that doesn’t work it’s
one of the other in that respect.
I think the band need to really think about which
of their different styles the want to really focus
on, or consider each style in a different album
rather than the same album as its sounding a bit
all over the place at the moment.
