Blackfield is a project put together between Porcupine
Tree singer Steven Wilson and Israeli singer Aviv
Geffen. The band started out in 2001 and has since
released 3 studio albums this new release being
their third.
First of all I would like to state that I’ve
heard that this band is meant to be a prog rock
band; I would not say that they should be branded
as such because not all the tracks on the album
are particularly progressive rock such as the
first 2 tracks “Glass House” and “Go
to Hell”, these are just very mellow rock
songs that are slightly odd, especially “Go
to Hell”.
The prog rock kicks in really with songs such
as “Dissolving with the Night” which
has a very theatrical feel to it in the respect
that it starts out mellow with piano segments
then flows into a sort of bridge that you’d
imagine to hear in a film when there’s a
certain anxiety or paranoia. This is followed
by “Blood” which is very different
and interesting to listen to as it’s definitely
the most progressive song on the album and ranges
between alternative styles and tempos.
I don’t think this would be a type of music
I would be able to walk around listening to on
my iPod, however when at home chilling out with
an alcoholic drink or outside with a cigarette
it would be the type of music to inspire a very
calm atmosphere. The song “On The Plane”
which is one of the calmest songs I have ever
heard.
The majority of the album is mostly just calm
light rock music, slightly psychedelic with elements
of prog rock. If anyone was expecting Porcupine
Tree 2.0 then this definitely isn’t for
you, it’s a completely different approach.
For me it isn’t an album I would walk around
listening to in my everyday life but for people
who are generally into the calmer side of life
then this is definitely an album to look into.
