I was looking forward to listening to this CD the
moment I received it, it had a very well designed
album cover and nice simple logo and I had very
high hopes for what was to come. Knowing nothing
about the band I threw the CD on and what I was
greeted to was a mix of a few different elements
from a few different bands.
The main comparison is to Funeral for a Friend,
as they are pretty much exactly the same style and
have the same melodic sound. Clean vocals with screams
integrated in small places over lightly distorted
guitar melodies. However the heavier side works
a lot better for Funeral for a Friend than it does
for these Hertfordshire rockers; mostly due to the
fact that the screams in Thousand Autumns' music
are just too whiney and need some work.
The strongest song on the CD for me is definitely
“I Chose Not to Remember”, it encompasses
all the best qualities of the band; containing the
best musical content, vocals and the screaming is
much better on this particular song than the rest.
It takes the metal side to them and slides in nicely
right towards the end of the song.
“Terrified” takes on a bit of a hardcore
turn, with all the screaming and heavier riffs built
into the song in such a way that it doesn’t
completely take away their own style with the melodic
chorus’s and the inclusion of clean guitars
in parts but makes the song stand out. Bit too much
of a style change for me as opposed to the rest
of the material.
The song “City of Sun” I hate to say
but vocally in some parts remind me of McFly, which
is an absolute shame that I can make this comparison
because it’s comparing them to a band that
is abysmal in comparison. Regardless of this fact
it’s still a rocking tune that you find yourself
tapping your feet to.
“Sent to Erase” is the middle ground
in the album that is very strong look into their
style with “I Chose Not to Remember”
which is the way I think best for them to go. Really
catchy song that also encompasses the metal interlude
every song seems to have; reminiscent of the Casually
Dressed and Deep in Conversation album by Funeral
for a Friend which is one of my favourite albums.
Overall this is not a bad start for the band, much
room for improvement but you can see that happening
with growth. With any luck they’ll come back
with a massive album that will blow the heads off
everyone, if they encompass all of the elements
from these four songs and carry them through their
career I don’t think they can go wrong.
4/5
