Gay For Johnny Depp are not a band for the faint
hearted or anyone with delicate ears and their new
album ‘What Doesn’t Kill You, Eventually
Kills You’ proves just that as it is one short
but hectic album which runs for just over 20minutes
but trust me when I say it will be 20minutes of
your life that you will remember extremely well
as GFJD have a knack of getting there listeners
hooked.
‘What Doesn’t Kill You, Eventually
Kills You’ is set for a February 14th Valentine’s
Day release date and is bigger, faster, rawer
and more random than anything GFJD have every
created before, the majority of the songs on the
album run for just under 2minutes and because
each song is on for such a short space of time
the album tends to morph into a couple of big
sounding moments as often you won’t realise
than a song has finished and that a new one has
started up, well it is only when the hectic screams
calm down for a second or two that you start to
wonder.
The album opens with ‘Santa Claus, The
Easter Bunny And Artistic Integrity’, and
yes the song is as crazy sounding as the title
makes it sounds, the first 20 seconds of the song
is a mad flurry of screams, this is then followed
on my much electronic-fury and believe it or not
but towards the end of the track everything tones
down as the song fades out.
‘Suckcess’ is one of my favourite
songs on the album and features heavy screams
of “Murdeeeeeer”, the song its self
really shines with the constant heavy drum beats
and guitar riffs going nonstop for nearly 2minutes.
The opening vocals during ‘She Has The
Hottest Limp (It’s All Noize) are fantastic
because frontman Sid Jagger does not come up for
air within the first 40seconds of the song as
he continues to scream his bollocks off, now this
is something that I really need to see on the
live circuit, when Sid finally comes up for air
the lyrics and vocals go slightly random sounding
as fucked up as a kids nursery rhyme, the instrumental
work and electronics running throughout the song
also adds to the mental sound of the song.
The shortest track on the album is ‘Humility
Is For People Who Don’t Comprehend Their
Own Moriality’ which runs for 1minute and
24seconds and shockingly enough it is quite a
slow paced normal sounding track compared to most
GFJD material, once again it is the drumming which
really stands out and the overall hectic instrumental
work towards the end.
You just have to look at the band’s name
and the song titles to know that you can’t
take these guys seriously as it is not every day
that you listen to songs titled ‘No, I’m
Married To Jesus, Now Keep Your Fucking Hands
Off Of Him’, or ‘Santa Claus, The
Easter Bunny And Artistic Integrity’ or
the amazing Slade cover which has nicely been
renamed ‘Cum On Feel The Boize’.
It is not every day that you come across a band
as random and crazy as Gay For Johnny Depp but
when you do it is a bloody pleasure as what Gay
For Johnny Depp have done with their latest album
‘What Doesn’t Kill You, Eventually
Kills You’ is pretty much everything that
isn’t in the music rule book as the whole
album is random where no two songs sound the same
and where you don’t know what you are going
to get from one song to another even after a couple
of listens you will notice something that you
didn’t notice previously, Gay For Johnny
Depp may not be everyone’s cup of tea but
they are just the band we need to shake up the
hardcore scene.
