The Southwest of England has given us many things:
Cornish pasties, tales of rabid hounds and one
of the world's surfing meccas. It comes as no
surprise then that new indie fourpiece, In Gratitude,
should be an equal delight to hail from the British
Riveira. In five songs plus one remix, In Gratitude,
claim your attention with hook laden melodies
and sugar sweet vocals telling tales of love lost
and life thereafter.
Prosperity builds up behind a crescendo of continuous
chords and pitter-patter drums, leading you to
believe something loud is about to befall your
ears. You're wrong. Instead delicate piano tinkles
around soft vocals in a way that is completely
disarming without sounding small or meek. Delirious
closes the five track masterpiece and what an
absolutely mouthwatering morsel of spot on indie-pop
it is. A tune that sounds like it has just washed
up on the So Cal shoreline and sits comfortably
by the campfire next to the likes of Death Cab
and Patrick Park. Throughout the entire EP, In
Gratitude nail the up tempo lament for the newly
broken hearted club and tracks Always and Moving
On are no exception. The former taking more dance
vibes in with the guitar pop in their hearts while
Moving On takes it up a notch with chant along
bridges perfect for the stage. Taking inspiration
from all walks of modern music, In All Dishonesty
juxtaposes stripped back and raw vocals with a
heavier guitar riff and screaming vocals in places.
All adding to the emotion of seeming desperation
and exasperation behind the track.
Only In Youth is poignant and diverse without
being alienating or pretentious. Relatable lyrics
and exquisite song writing lends itself to the
bright collection of tunes put on the table in
this EP. A free digital release, there is no excuse
not to experience the Devonian heartbroken quartet
first hand. An amazing and beautiful set of songs
that tugs on your heartstrings at every opportunity.
