Little Fish have spent the past 12months sharing
the stage with some fantastic bands such as Hole,
Blondie, Alice In Chains, Spinnerette, Eagles
Of Death Metal, Juliette Lewis, Black Rebal Motorcycle
and many others, and as you can see from the wide
list of band’s Little Fish have a diverse
sound which appeals to a wide range of people
hence the diverse selection of bands they have
supported.
I first got into Little Fish through their outstanding
single ‘Whiplash’ and since that moment
I have been waiting for their debut album and
at long last I have my hands on a copy of their
debut album ‘Baffled And Beat’ and
have to say it is pretty damn nifty and easily
going to take this Oxford duo to decent places.
‘Baffled And Beat’ features 12 tracks
and they are all so different from each other
some are all frantic and happy sounding and some
are dark and depressing sounding but one thing
for sure is that no two songs on the album sound
the same, there is mass variety which is enough
to appeal to pretty much everyone.
The album opens with ‘Darling Dear’
a song which starts off with some Nirvana style
guitar riffs and softly spoken female vocals,
as the song progresses the rhythm and overall
vibe of the song get’s bigger and faster
throughout with some beautiful catchy vocals of
“la, la, la, la”, but it is the piercing
screams from Juju which come in during the final
few seconds of the song which prove to be the
lasting moment of the song as those screams are
quite psychotic sounding.
‘Bang! Bang!’ is a really catchy song
where the vocals throughout are quite simple with
Juju singing “bang, bang, bang” throughout
the majority of the song, the drum beats are fast
paced and constant and the guitar riffs kick out
a good rhythm, however it is Juju’s vocals
which really rock throughout the song as it is
clear that she has spent a fair bit of time working
on her vocals in the past as during ‘Bang!
Bang!’ she conquers many different vocal
styles and with such ease.
‘Am I Crazy’ is quite a simple yet
beautiful sounding song that carriers on the crazy
theme and pace of the album, the song starts off
sounding quite soft but as the drum beats build
up and Juju’s vocals become louder the song
moves more into life until the sound fades out
and builds up again and again throughout.
‘Herion Dance’ is a real haunting
slow paced song , where once again Juju get’s
to shine with her vocals, this time around her
vocals come across quite soft and full of emotion,
overall the song is alright but fails to fully
take off and make an impact.
‘Sweat N Shiver’ is an upbeat happy
pop-rock song, it is defiantly a summer anthem,
‘Die Young’ opens with some fantastic
drum beats and proves to be quite a hard hitting
happy song, ‘Luck’s Run Out’
is a soft piano based Ballard which is quite beautiful
and weepy sounding.
One of the last songs on the album is the fantastic
‘Whiplash’, the song that first got
me into Little Fish and I have to say that I still
love the song as much as I did the first time
that I listened to it, the song is so upbeat and
catchy sounding, the drum beats are fantastic
and puts the drummer skills of Meg White from
the White Stripes to shame.
The album closes with ‘Sorry State’
which happens to be a real slow and beautiful
finish to such an great album.
It’s safe to say that Little Fish are a
band that not everyone will understand or find
enjoyment from but there is defiantly something
very different and unique about Little Fish and
that is why there is so much excitement surrounding
this two piece at the moment and I am sure that
excitement is about to double now their fantastic
debut album ‘Baffled And Beat’ is
released.
