Recently I have been hearing a lot about Francesqa
mainly due to the fact that Blink 182 and Angels
And Airwaves front man, Tom Delonge handpicked the
band out of thousands of bands to open the Slam
Dunk Festival on the introducing stage at both Hatfield
and Leeds, but before this the band were already
steadily making a name for themselves whilst touring
alongside bands such as The Automatic, Canterbury,
Futures and Deaf Havana and now they are ready to
release their debut self-released EP ‘We Lived’.
‘We Lived’ is a 5 track EP which
runs for just over 20 minutes and considering
that these guys have been together for just under
a year the EP is pretty damn amazing and shows
a lot of potential of an great band in the making.
The EP opens with ‘Ghosts’ a song
which oozes in style with soaring vocals, punchy
guitar riffs, solid rhythm section and a general
happy fast flowing feel that will leave you hitting
the repeat button to listen to the song again
and again because trust me the song becomes better
after each listen.
‘Hopeful’ starts off with a section
of happy sounding guitar riffs, moments later
Ashley’s vocals come in softly as the drums
kick in and before you know it the drums and guitars
are working well together creating a classic sound
whilst Ashley smoothly shows off his beautiful
vocals.
‘Years’ is the longest running track
on the EP running for 5minutes and 36seconds,
it also happens to be the most chilled out track
on the EP, vocally the song is great as Ashley
has a great way with his vocals where his style
twists and turns throughout time sounding extremely
dreamy in places.
‘Crooked Little Sun’ opens with a
slightly hectic sounding instrumental piece which
clearly shows that Francesqa can crank the noise
up a notch or two and that they can also jam whilst
creating fantastic results, as the song get’s
going the vocals take centre stage and take you
on radio friendly journey.
The EP closes with the title track ‘We
Lived’ and the song happens to be the weakest
track on the EP in the way that it is so toned
down, a little to toned down for my liking to
be honest but the saving grace is that the song
does become a little more lively towards the end.
I am pretty sure that next year Francesqa are
going to be the opening band on the Kerrang Tour
and that the release of ‘We Lived’
is going to boost their profile even more and
help them become the well loved band that they
deserve to be, having Tom Delonge hand pick them
to open an event has opened new doors for them
but really it is their music that does all the
talking and in such style.
5/5
