When Attack Attack! Came through the post I was
all excited thinking that I had been sent an early
copy of the Welsh poppy-punk band Attack! Attack!
But to my shock that hadn’t been the case
and instead it is the second album from the American
Attack Attack!, yes I know it is very confusing
that there are two bands across the world with pretty
much the same name, anyway I did a little bit of
research on the American Attack Attack! Before listening
to the album and realised that they are quite a
hated band but decided to listen to the album with
an open mind which I have to admit was difficult.
Attack Attack! Really are a marmite band that
you are either going to love or hate and for me
even after listening to the album a few times
over I am leaning more towards the hate section
of the scale, you are all probably wondering what
makes Attack Attack! So bad and the reason is
that the band really do not know what kind of
band they want to be as there sound is a massive
mix which sounds absolutely rubbish together it
is like they have taken bits of scream, hardcore,
pop, punk, metal, techno and merged it all together
into a big old mess.
The album starts with ‘Sexual Man Chocolate’
which opens with some tasty guitar riffs but after
about 30seconds things start to go on a downhill
tumble with an horrible set of gruff vocals coming
in with piano sounds running over the top with
the gruff vocals fading out and more Chiodos style
melodic vocals coming in, the song is really unpredictable
throughout and no two seconds are the same, normally
this should be a positive thing but not in this
case.
‘Renob, Nevada’ is a song which does
show some potential as it does have some really
positive moments on offer and is quite a catchy
song but it is the whole randomness of the band
not knowing what direction they really want to
take which knocks the song down a few notches,
like what is with the random soundscapes towards
the middle of the song which are then met with
loud screams and more melodic vocals seconds later,
yes it is experimental but experimental gone wrong.
The oddest moment on the album is ‘Shut
Your Mouth’ the song is so different from
anything else on the album and it is Attack Attack!
Gone pure electronic, it sounds like 3OH3! Gone
wrong, seriously give it a listen yourself and
you will instantly understand what I am on about,
it sounds so out of place on the album and really
does make the band lose any kudos they may have
picked up elsewhere within the album, but then
again I am sure the crunkcore kids and BrokeNCYDE
fans will be loving it.
I feel that Attack Attack! Really need to go
back to the drawing board and have a long hard
think on what direction they want to take musically
because at the moment they have taken a bit of
pretty much every genre of music and come up with
a sound that is so over the top and unpredictable
that no real enjoyment can be had out of it, don’t
get me wrong there are some good moments within
the album but they are just sandwiched in between
a load of shit.
