Album Review
Stone Temple Pilots - Stone Temple PilotsStone Temple Pilots – Stone Temple Pilots

The Stone Temple Pilots are one of those bands that I have managed to avoid like the plague for many years now, I heard the odd song on TV whilst growing up and really couldn’t get on with their sound or the arrogance of front man Scott Weiland so just imagine my disappointment when they were announced as the main support band on the main stage on Sunday at Download Festival and then a week or so before the festival there brand new self titled album arrived through my post box.

Well I put off listening to the album for a few days but then I did the brave thing and gave it a spin whilst in a very negative mindscape thinking that I was going to hate the album but to my surprise I loved the album from the start and have since been listening to it on repeat whilst notching up a few new favourite tracks which have now gathered a place on my IPod play list.

‘Stone Temple Pilots’ happens to be the band’s first album release in over 9 years and it is fantastic, I can’t comment on if it is the band’s best album or anything like that as I have never really listened to much of their music as mentioned above but what I do know is that the album is solid with each and every song being as good as the last.

The album starts with the band’s current single ‘Between The Lines’ and the song is a solid sounding catchy stadium rock song from the start, the song bounces along at a frantic pace with Weiland’s vocals sounding so smooth and sexual.

‘Take A Load’ starts off with some big sounding guitar riffs and loud and clear vocals that flow at such an beautiful pace. ‘Huckleberry Crumble’ starts off with riffs that sound like they were lifted from Black Sabbath ‘War Pigs’ whilst then moving on to a big sounding Aerosmith style stadium rock sound that is big, catchy and pretty damn cleaver.

‘Hickory Dichotomy’ is the best song on the album, it features some classic guitar solos and really fast flowing catchy vocals that are instantly going to be impaled to your brain for future listening, ‘Cinnamon’ is the second best song on the album and sounds so different from anything else from the album, if you think of one of the catchiest song’s that you have ever heard by The Wildhearts then you will be close to understanding what ‘Cinnamon’ is like before you even listen to it because it does have a massive wildhearts feel about it, the song is real clean sounding and within moments you will be singing “come on, come on yeah” along with Weilands newly found beautiful vocals.

The rest of the album is full of big sounding songs such as ‘Hazy Daze’ which has grunge rock written all over it, ‘Bagman’ which is yet another radio friendly catchy number, ‘Fast As I Can’ where the guitars get turned up a notch or two as the band jam out and the album closer ‘Maver’ which is close to being a balled but slightly up tempo to be fully classed as one.

Some positives have obviously came out of Velvet Revolver splitting up and that is Slash is now out doing his own solo album and solo tour which is going down a storm and Scott Weiland is back with the Stone Temple Pilots and they have just released their comeback album which happens to be one of the finest albums that I have heard so far this year, if you were like me and could never get into the Stone Temple Pilots now is the time to give them a fresh chance as a lot of enjoyment is to be had within this self titled.
