It has now been three years since Against Me! Released
their first major label album ‘New Wave’
on sire Records, it was met with the average response
from people saying that they had sold out for signing
to a major label but these people soon got over
it after hearing how good that the album was well
now it seems like the same opinions could be coming
back as Against Me! Are gearing up to release their
new album ’White Crosses’ which happens
to be their second album on Sire Records.
‘White Crosses’ was produced by the
legendary producer Butch Vig who has been working
with many outstanding band’s these days
such as Green Day, Foo Fighters, Muse and now
Against Me! For the second time and the final
result is fantastic and is easily the best album
that Against Me! Have ever released, obviously
this is down to a matter of opinion as the small
minority who still claim that Against Me! Have
sold out will no doubt have nothing good to say
about their last couple of albums but at the end
of the day that is there loss as ‘White
Crosses’ is great.
Over the years with each album release the sound
of Against Me! Has been changing slightly for
the better for example if you listened to the
band’s debut, ‘Against Me! Is Reinventing
Axl Rose’ and then put ‘White Crosses’
on straight after you will instantly notice the
change and realise how much Against Me! Have evolved
for the better over the years.
There are ten tracks feature on ‘White
Crosses’ and four bonus tracks which were
taken from the ‘White Crosses’ sessions,
so they are all brand new tracks and all so easy
to get into, the album opens with the title track
‘White Crosses’ and the track is a
massive clean sounding song that bounces along
at a melodic pace and the vocals from Gabel is
all so good especially as he sings “White
crosses on the church lawn, I want to smash them
all!” in an upbeat and positive way.
‘I Was A Teenage Anarchist’ is a
song about growing up and outgrowing punk rock
politics, the lyrics are well written and the
catchy chorus of “Do you remember when you
were young and you wanted to set the world on
fire” will instantly grow to be a fan favorite
sing-a-long moment at future Against Me! Gigs,
the song is like classic Against me! Just covered
in a more mature fashion.
‘Because Of the Shame’ opens with
some mellow sounding piano sounds, which leaves
you wondering where Against Me! Are going with
the song and then moments later a set of “woaaaahs”
come in, with Gabel’s vocals coming in loud
and clear moments later to take the song on a
massive mainstream radio friendly journey which
is bound to piss off the people who claim Against
Me! Have sold out but please thousands of new
fans in the progress.
‘Suffocation’ is another killer song
that has a slight up beat yet chant-a-long chorus
of “Suffocation, modern life in the western
world” which is met by some killer sounding
guitar riffs that these guys should be proud of.
One of my favorite tracks on the album is the
chant-a-long ‘Rapid Decompression’
the song is full of energy and runs for just 1minute
and 46seconds and features that all out punk rock
energy that punks old and new just love.
The whole album is fantastic and to be honest
it is really pointless to carry on writing about
each and every track on the album as the best
thing for you to do is just head out and buy the
album as if you are a punk rock fan you will love
everything that ‘White Crosses’ has
to offer.
