Shirukume - Speaking In ColoursShirukume - Speaking In Colours

Shirukume have been playing together for a couple of years now and this EP is evidence of how much talent they have between them. It’s full of unusual, sometimes sudden time-signature changes and a good mix of noise and ambience. They are, quite simply, a unique band.

‘The lighthouse keeper’ is a fantastic song, possibly my favourite on the album. The influence of bands such as SikTh is apparent in this song, which features a beautiful break from the hard hitting noise which features an absolutely stunning vocal.

Track three, ‘In the Eyes of the Architect’ features a fantastic mix of simultaneous screams and clean vocals which really grabs the attention especially when mixed with the heavy hitting guitars that I think may become one of Shirukume’s most defining features, as well as those almost angelic clean vocals.

‘I, clockwatcher’ has a fantastic opening, I almost expected a hardcore punk masterpiece…what I actually got was my second favourite song. Its guitar melodies are catchy and the whole song has a groove to it that the previous songs didn’t have.

The final track on the album, ‘The Escape Artist’ is in my opinion, the most epic sounding of all the songs and is a wonderful end to a brilliant debut. It features some wonderful drum and vocal work and really encompasses what this band are capable of. A definite ‘look what we can do’ track!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Shirukume listening to this it’s that they’ve spent the last 2 years perfecting their own sound and writing style. They’re a band to look out for in the future and I can’t wait to see them when they’re on tour down my way!

5/5
