Album Review
Bleeding Through - Bleeding ThroughBleeding Through - Bleeding Through

“I want to know why the fuck you’re really here / Why are you here? / Empty, no I’ll never be / Ten years undying disease” is the potently introspective, opening salvo that marks a decade together for Bleeding Through. It forms part of their sixth studio album and is a clear indication of the band’s state of mind. It’s this frank self-assessment that defines the album and sees them suck up a plethora of metal and hardcore styles to deliver a more antagonistic, bile-soaked rollercoaster ride than ever before.

Derek Youngsma’s frantic drums are as colossal as ever and with guitarists Brian Leppke and Dave Nassie, making his recording debut, throwing shreds and solos about like confetti there is very little room left for Brendan Schiepatti to squeeze his vocals into. His indicative, acid-gargling scowl is always there, however, bravely battling away against the tidal wave of sound threatening to drown him.

Kicking away from the expansive, symphonic keyboard washes that litter the album, we recoil at the bitch-slap chants of ‘Anti-Hero’ and ‘This Time Nothing Is Sacred‘. We curiously detour into the sweetly-sung choruses of ‘Salvation Never Found’ and ‘Distortion, Devotion’, before we sink into the lumbering swamp metal of ’Light My Eyes’ and disappear down a vortex of bloodied fists and cantankerous thunder as ‘Drag Me To The Ocean’ and ‘Slow Your Roll’ drop.

There aren’t many bands with the kind of rash bravado required to attempt the level of genre-flicking that Bleeding Through partake in and here, with their sound delving deeper into darkness than ever before, the blinding patches of light stand out even more. This album should really come with a pair of sunglasses attached - without some kind of filter we are dilating with the Suicide Silence and Lamb Of God shadings and squinting as the Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation nuances hove into view. It’s transparent that, with their record company disputes now seemingly behind them, the band have emerged with a real call-to-arms and a very personal album; an album that promises to define their future.
