Motion City Soundtrack are one of the most under
rated pop-punk bands around, the band seem to forever
be releasing solid material but never seem to rise
their profile and seem to be hiding below the big
punk bands such as Green Day, Blink 182, New Found
Glory, NOFX and even Alkaline Trio and I really
can’t understand why as they have so many
solid sounding songs under their belt.
Well Motion City Soundtrack have now signed to
Columbia Records and have just released their
forth studio album ‘My Dinosaur Life’
which should hopefully see the band get the recognition
they deserve and raise their profile somewhat,
especially now that they have Columbia Records
looking after them, if they don’t then there
is something seriously wrong with the music industry.
‘My Dinosaur Life’ is the best album
that Motion City Soundtrack have ever released
and it is true to their style in the way that
it is geek rock carried out in an extremely poppy
way. The album opens with ‘Worker Bee’
a song which takes you on a big melodic journey
that is full of big power chords, loud and clear
catchy vocals and general rocking melodies.
‘A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help)
is a proper bouncy number which opens with really
clear sounding bouncy basslines, the song sounds
massive thanks to the big production job that
Blink 182 legend Mark Hoppus has done.
The lead single to be released from the album
is ‘Her Words Destroyed My Planet’,
the song is mega sounding with big crunching tasty
guitar riffs, crispy clear sing-a-long vocals
and a general upbeat happy melodic feel running
through the song from the opening beat right up
until the closing second.
There are so many strong moments within the album
but the song’s which stand out the most
to me are ‘History Lesson’ and ‘@!#?@!’,
both songs are so different from each other band
stand out and make an impact in their own little
way, ‘History Lesson’ for example
vocally reminds me of Flogging Molly, the vocals
are so different coming across in a more edgy
shout-a-long way, the song features some rocking
beats and will be a song which you put on repeat.
‘@!#?@!’ is an edgy song which features
a variety of swear words but they come across
in a real upbeat happy way rather than a malicious
angry way, do remember that Motion City Soundtrack
are geek rockers not a bunch of gangsters, I am
sure in no time you will find yourself singing
the words “mother fuckers” in your
finest squeaky voice.
There is not a dull moment to be found within
‘My Dinosaur Life’ as Motion City
Soundtrack have done a sterling job in creating
the best album they possibly could, it is an album
that they should be proud of and so should their
fans and only time will tell if this time around
they get the success they truly deserve.
4/5
