Well this is a real weird one. Usually I like to
start off with an overview of the genre we're dealing
with. But here's it's nearly impossible –
everything sounds a bit different. They're clearly
an interesting band. “Whatever Gets You By”
is some theatrical folk number, “The Drawing
Board” takes that on to a Mad Caddies level,
“Foundation's Cracked” goes a bit Temper
Trap, “Genetically Modified Fable” starts
off like a slow dark QOTSA track, and “Wooden
Heart” is a bit Ocean Colour Scene. I suppose
over all it's pleasant folk rock indie nonsense,
with tendencies to really go off on one. Although
things start to level out towards the end of the
album, the first half is certainly all over the
place. If you like Fleet Foxes, I'll guess you'll
like this. As it happens, I don't really, but it
will find some appeal somewhere or other. However,
you cannot detract from the fact that this is an
interesting release, and were I to dig this folk
rock revival, I'd probably be playing this a lot.
4/5
