Fifteen songs. Short and sweet. They way I like
it. Some bands try and make their songs long to
prove something and things just get boring. However
it's fair to say that Affordable Hybrid have my
attention from start to finish. There's something
a bit Modest Mouse, a bit McClusky, a bit Vines
and a bit Of Montreal (if they weren't so odd and
had some balls) about Affordable Hybrid. It's that
scruffy catchy indie punk sound, with the dual vocals
that are a bit all over the place but really on
the spot at the same time, you know. The album opens
with “Jim Jones” which is enough to
wet your appetite and set you up for what's to come.
“Faces” and “Ego Blues”
are a couple that stand out early on. It's all fairly
upbeat and the album maintains oomph – the
short tracks aiding the experience. They're all
punchy numbers, real winners. No break-downs, just
start to finish, blam blam blam. Before you know
it it's over, and although you're a little confused
what just happened, you know you loved every second
of it. “Straight To You” is another
good'un. They also remind me of this band called
Hunting The Minotaur, who were one of the bands
supporting Haunts in a tiny venue in Southampton.
So that probably meant nothing to 95% of you. But,
basically, it's good. Very good.
4.5/5
