I have been in love with this album for a little
while now, so being asked to review it is far from
being a chore. I remember finding Delorentos on
Last.fms player – I'd searched a slightly
obscure Irish indie band and from then on got stuck
in a loop of quite uninspiring Irish indie bands,
however these chaps stuck out. It was the fantastically
catchy “Hallucinations” that initially
won me over, but before you make it to that slightly
Franz Ferdinand masterpiece, the album opens with
the fantastic “Sanctuary” and “Secret.”
These guys are indie – but let's clear this
up – not in a plucky wonky Foals kind of way,
and not in a linear happy-snappy Two Door Cinema
Club kind of way, nor in a disgustingly-close-to-becoming-shoegaze
MGMT kind of way, but instead a more than listenable
softer indie, packed full of rhythm and melody and
catchy choruses galore – in fact it's probably
somewhere between indie and alternative rock.
Faultless. I love it. Other stand out tracks are
“Body Cold” and the penultimate track
“You Can Make Sound” which presents
itself as a really epic sounding song. The explosive
cymbals and heavy reverb allow for a really beautiful
intro, which is the chorus also. And so what if
it goes very slightly Orson for the verses? The
chorus makes up for anything. If BoyZone had used
this chorus in all their songs I could forgive
them for what they did to the charts in the 1990s.
The album finishes on one of only two slower songs
on the album, and if I'm honest, I'm not feeling
them so much. Fair enough, you want some variation.
But they do the rest better. Really fucking well,
in fact. Top cheese.
5/5
