I have a big old love hate relationship with circuses;
in one factor I hate the places because they freak
me out in a way and I’m not fully sure why,
it might be the fact that they are most of the time
run by freaky people, you know the kind of people
that have a couple of extra toes and their sister
is also their daughter and niece, ok I might be
taking things to the extreme hear but I’m
sure they are somewhere down that line, but the
factor that I like about circuses are the fact that
no matter what they always have you sitting in the
edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen
next and you are always mesmerized by how the performers
do exactly what they do.
You are now probably wondering why the big speech
from me about circuses, well the reason behind
it is that I have just come across a band called
La Folie who are due to release their debut album
‘Risus Sardonicus’ on the 5th April
and the whole album artwork is circuses themed
and so is the band’s sound and live show
according to the press release.
La Folie are a very unique sounding band, the
only band you can really compare them to is the
gypsy punks Gogol Bordello but then they still
sound very far off from them but happen to generate
the same about of enjoyment.
The album opens with ‘Interlopers’
a song that has a feel of a big amusement park
where you are going on a 3 minute journey through
a ghost train or a general amusement ride which
is full of random twists and turns, the song is
extremely enjoyable and so well written, in fact
the whole album is full of funky twists and turns
and freaky sounds right up until the last beat
and spoken word piece of the closing track ‘Madame
Palm’.
Highlights of the album are ‘Svengalt’
and ‘Arachnophobia’, both songs stand
out in their own way, the first song is really
catchy and features brilliant backing vocals whilst
the later is more slow paced and features deep
dark vocals which go screamo in places kicking
off a slight feel of the band The Horrors.
Just like the press release says, the whole
album does have that circus feel about it and
you do end up appreciating the bands creativity
and song writing skills as they have come up with
something that is so different from what everyone
else is doing these days, I really doubt La Folie
are going to become megastars in the music industry
but I am sure they will please every single person
who buys ‘Risus Sardonicus’ and also
the people who check them out live.
4/5
