Dropkick Murphys are one of those bands that every
single punk fan loves, they have that Irish charm,
Irish sound and the Irish drunken charm and drinking
anthems, if you have ever been to a Dropkick Murphys
show then you know there fans have the time of their
lives getting drunk, mixing with other fans and
generally singing along to the some of the finest
punk anthems ever made.
The Dropkick Murphys have a tradition where they
play many shows in their home town of Boston MA
during the week of ST. Patrick’s Day which
also happens to include a show on ST. Patrick’s
day, they recorded their show there back in 2002
which went on to sell well over 250,000 copies
worldwide and now they are back to release their
second live on ST. Patrick’s Day compilation
in the form of ‘Live On Lansdowne’
which was recorded over seven sold out shows on
the time of six drunken nights from the 12 March
to the 17th March 2010.
‘Live On Lansdowne’ features a totally
different set list from the bands last ST. Patrick’s
Day live compilation so classic songs such as
‘The Gauntlet’ and ‘Spicy McHaggis
Jig’ are not featured but then again if
you do want to listen to those songs just revisit
your 2002 live compilation CD, instead 20 other
fantastic songs from The Dropkick Murphys back
catalogue are included such as the ever so catchy
‘Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya’, everyone’s
favourite drinking son ‘Kiss Me, I’m
Shitfaced’ and the closing moments of the
compilation of without a doubt the best as The
Mighty Mighty Bosstones take to the stage with
The Dropkick Murphys for a rendition of ‘I’m
Shipping up To Boston’.
The great thing about ‘Live On Lansdowne’
is the fact that you really do fell the live vibe
as all the talking between songs has been included,
all the fans screaming and shouting has been included
so everything does sound live and it is the second
best way to experience The Dropkick Murphys live
or should I say the poor man’s way.
You will probably find yourself listening to
the CD the most as it is a great compilation but
the DVD is also great to check out as the quality
is really good and it is also quite interesting
to start counting all the green Dropkick Murphys
t-shirts in the crowd, I gave up after I got to
100 but trust me there are many as their fans
are proper hardcore, the other good bit about
the DVD is watching the various different talented
dancers taking to the stage and generally seeing
both the band and the fans having a great time
which you obviously can’t see on the CD.
I feel that the set list for ‘Live On Lansdowne’
is not as good as the previous live Dropkick Murphys
compilation but that does not stop ‘Live
On Lansdowne’ from being a good release
as in my eyes it is a must have for any Dropkick
Murphys or straight up punk fan.
