Crime in Stereo - I was trying to describe you to someoneCrime in Stereo - I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone

Having really enjoyed the 2007 effort Is Dead and really liking the sound of Drugwolf on their Myspace (www.myspace.com/crimeinstereo) I was looking forward to reviewing this album. Produced by Mike Sapone who has also worked with greats such as Brand New, Public Enemy and Taking Back Sunday from beginning to end it's safe to say I was certainly not dissapointed.

The opener, Queue Moderns with it's catchy beat and synths is, at first, oddly reminiscent of 30 Seconds to Mars – something which some people may not like but it works. It also helps that this is not 30 Seconds to Mars and it changes all very suddenly into a hard hitting, melodic break down almost which runs us nicely into the Drugwolf.

Drugwolf, recently released on their Myspace, is a well chosen preview to the album. It's incredibly catchy and melodic with a chorus that just says “I'm going to to kick your ass live and you will enjoy it”.

Track 4 Not Dead sounds like it belongs somewhere on my summer playlist, a festival song for sure. An anthem you can dance to with pounding beats, crammed full of energy. I think i'll be listening to this one a few times over the next few days.

Even the moderately tame Young is fantastic. A beautifully orchestrated song, beginning with a n incredibly heavy, laboured sound before becoming wonderfully summery.

Dark Island City for those not in the know is a song originally released in 2006 on 'The Troubled Stateside' but OH MY is it different now. Drastically different in all the best ways, it's incredibly haunting. Almost a reminder that this band are not just about summertime-sounding anthems.

Kristian Hallbert's vocals are characteristically grainy whilst the rest of the band get on with that Long Island hardcore sound that you could say is reminiscent of bands such as Million Dead or even Brand New in some ways. Although perhaps for some not as strictly hardcore as they would like, what it lacks in style in makes up for disproportionately in spirit. As expected this is an album full of twists and turns that now only keep you interested, they keep you guessing which I like to think is the point.

If one thing is for sure, it is that Crime in Stereo are a band to see live, perfect for festivals they're the ultimate summer time band. The entire album is packed full of songs you want to listen to again and again and never stop dancing to.

5/5
