'Pride of Nowhere' is the debut album from hard
hitting, anti 9 'til 5ers, The Smoking Hearts. Since
forming in 2007 they have opened for bands such
as Gallows and Bring me the Horizon, as well as
giants such as Misfits and Skid Row...it's safe
to say this is no pop-punk offering.
Recorded over just 14 days and mastered by Russ
Russell (Napalm Death/The Wildhearts), with 13
songs and clocking in at just 29 minutes and 25
seconds I'm expecting something relentless. You
will be pleased to know that's exactly what this
album is.
Once you're past the opening track, you'll note
not the intro even though it is an instrumental
it's far too long to be an intro and it's also
not skip-worthy like most, you're hit in the face
by 'Daddy's Little Disaster' - a fast and cheeky
song perfect for the introduction of the bands
sound.
The end of track three, 'Thrash B4 Gash' leads
straight into what I think is one of the best
songs on this album 'Shred and Destroy'. It's
a total party song, the sort that really encompasses
what this band are about – having fun, partying
hard and not sitting around letting life pass
you by!
A more catchy vocal melody and punk-rock sound
makes me smile and want to party with the next
track 'George Street Wrestling'. Personally, it's
the best track on the album. It's a real feel
good song, which I imagine played live would inspire
an outbreak of movement from any crowd –
hostile or not.
'Give'em the Suit' is another gem on this so
far infectious album. Rhythmic and hard hitting,
it features what might be my favourite lyric from
these party-hard maniacs “we hope you all
choke on your nine to five” which is what
this song's all about.
The closing song, 'Message in a Molotov', is
a brilliant close. Full of energy much like the
rest of the album, brings the album to an almighty
halt.
It's obvious to me at least that these boys have
no intention of sitting in the gutter, they've
got their focus clearly aimed at the stars. They
have 2 independently released EP's, 'BloodMoney'
and 'Give'em Hell'. 'Give'em Hell' is available
through iTunes via their Myspace www.myspace.com/smokinghearts.
Another offering well worth a listen. Whether
they'll make it to the stars or not I can't tell
yet. What I can tell is they're certainly not
going anywhere just yet.
If half of what I've heard about their live shows
is true then they're definitely worth seeing.
I know I'll be heading down to catch them live
sometime.
'Pride of Nowhere' is the sort of album you can
put on in any mood and instantly want to party
or start partying harder! Beyond the rhythm, punk-rock
and rock 'n' roll of this album though lies a
very clear message – do not let life pass
you by, do what you want and don't take shit for
doing it.
