At the moment there is a lot of hype going around
about the big four thrash metal bands Metallica,
Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax who after leading the
thrash metal scene for well over 25 years are playing
a few shows together as a four some at a few select
Sonisphere Festivals across mainland Europe and
to coincide with this Anthrax have decided to re-release
their third studio album ‘Among The Living’
in a deluxe edition which features the 9 tracks
from the original version of the album with 6 extra
tracks bundled on top which happen to be live, instrumental
and generally rare versions of classic Anthrax song’s,
also bundles on the release is a DVD which was recorded
live in London back in 1987 which features 12 classic
Anthrax song’s which is a perfect collector’s
item for hardcore Anthrax album and the perfect
starting point to new fans of the band.
‘Among The Living’ is the most legendary
Anthrax album which they will never be able to
better no matter what they release as like Metallica
‘Masters Of Puppets’ it is the album
which sticks the most in the fans heads and is
the album which fans expect to hear the most tracks
from on the live circuit and this has been the
case for over 23 years now.
For anyone who has never heard ‘Among The
Living’ the album is solid throughout but
the best track featured on the album has to be
the opening track ‘Among The Living’
which the album is actually named after, the song
opens with such a powerful jamming session which
starts off slow but quickly speeds up into thrash
metal madness which leaves you bashing your head
like a nutter to the massive sound of the song,
the song features some of the best metal drumming
ever, it may sound slightly tinny but production
back in 1987 was not quite like how it is today,
the chorus is also great with lines of “I
am the walking dude, I can see all of the world,
twist you mind with fear, I’m the man with
the power, among the living, follow me or die”.
‘Caught In A Mosh’ is another great
fast paced song which features fast guitar riffs,
fast drum beats as well as fast vocals, pretty
much everything that Anthrax do here is fast and
furious and so damn listenable, especially the
solid sounding guitar solo.
‘I Am The Law’ is another classic
moment and a big old fan favourite and it is so
easy to see why as everything is in place so perfectly
and equally hit’s off that heavy vibe especially
with the raw chant-a-long vocals. ‘Indians’
is another great song which opens with a massive
instrumental piece.
Everyone knows that the album ‘Among The
Living’ is a classic release that needs
to be in everyone’s collection but what
about the exclusive DVD included, well the DVD
is fantastic and perfectly shows you classic anthrax
when hair metal was all the rage with pretty much
everyone head banging and jumping around having
the time of their lives to the fast flowing aggressive
sound of Anthrax.
For anyone new to Anthrax I recommend that you
go out and get ‘Among The Living’
now as it is the best Anthrax album made that
little bit better thanks to the bonus tracks,
re-mastered songs and bonus DVD.
5/5
