The Stranglers - Decades ApartThe Stranglers – Decades Apart

If it wasn’t for band’s like The Stranglers and The Sex Pistols then the music scene in the 70’s would of been a very boring place and band’s today probably wouldn’t be like they are now as so many bands from the alternative rock and punk scene are influenced by The Stranglers, major bands such as Pulp, Kasabian and more low key bands such as the 4FT Fingers all state The Stranglers as their musical influences.

I have always known some of the classic songs by The Stranglers such as ‘Golden Brown’, ‘All Day And All Of The Night’ and ‘Nice ‘N’ Sleazy’, ‘No More Heroes’, ‘Peaches’ but after listening to their latest compilation CD ‘Decades Apart’ I realise that I actually know more song’s by The Stranglers than I originally thought.

‘Decades Apart’ is a double CD release which features 35 tracks, 33 of those tracks are classic material that have been released by The stranglers from 1077 right up until 2006 and 2 of the tracks are brand new tracks recorded for the release of ‘Decades Apart’. The new songs are ‘I Don’t See The World Like You Do’ and their forthcoming single ‘Retro Rockets’.

‘Retro Rockets’ is just as good as the classic Stranglers material, the song has a great groove which features the classic bouncy bass lines that The Stranglers are well known and loved for, the drums are keep up a good constant pace which proves that Jett Black still has it after all this time and the vocals come across stronger and clearer than ever before.

The other new song ‘I Don’t See The World Like You Do’ is quite an mellow song which sadly doesn’t have the same appeal as ‘Retro Rockets’ or the bands classic material, however it is still listenable but not a song you will come back to that often.

The great thing about ‘Decades Apart’ is that it is bundled in a massive time line so as the album goes on you get to see how The Stranglers have progressed across the years and you can easily pick out which era of The Stranglers you liked the most, for me it has to be the late 70’s and early 80’s that was defiantly when they were at their strongest.

‘Golden Brown’ is obviously the main Stranglers song that everyone knows and also ‘No More Heroes’ but it is Tracks such as ‘Waltzinblack’ which really appeal to me and make me wonder if the band were stoned back in 1981 when they wrote that as the song is a pure instrumental track which has the feel of a circus but a very freaky circus where you are on a major trip, either way it is a classic piece of music.

I would imagine ‘Decades Apart’ will be the last release from The Stranglers and I also expect that their forthcoming UK tour will also be their last tour as drummer Jett Black is in his early 70’s and the rest of the band are not far behind and I know their last UK tour was due to be their last but they have decided to carry on for one more. so I recommend that you all go out and buy ‘Decades Apart’ and catch The Stranglers on the road before it is to late as they are a band who write great lyrics, play classic riffs and have overall amazing songs that have stood the test of time.
