A trashy bass and drum mess consumes the start of
“Shotdown In A Small Town” – it's
thick and raw and it's rock and roll – preceding
a twiddling guitar lick and – there's something
quite Queens Of The Stone Age about it. Without
Homme's vocal drone. Instead you've got a gravelly
tone. This song is fantastic, with funky breakdowns
and a general sense of rocking brilliance. “Stoner
Girl” is also verging on funky – it's
a bit Fungus Amongus at its most linear, although
it doesn't really seem to get anywhere. Sadly, the
rest of the album continues like an average entry
into a medium sized town's battle of the bands.
It's tuneful and all, and even at times gets you
twitching and nodding, but it's not really that
exciting. Without the first track, I might not have
even listened to the very end, but I did in a vague
hope that there'd be more than one really promising
track. Alas, there wasn't really.
3/5
