On the cover there's a mad scientist type chap,
a yellow glow, a mean font, and an overwhelming
sense of evil. And then you play the CD and wet
yourself with laughter. Expecting some kind of heavy
shit – there's a digusting poppy alternative
mess. Take every generic country song, and speed
it up a bit with a tiny bit of pop-punk influence.
Not only is it not what I expected, but it's also
rubbish. It's what Busted would be recording if
they hadn't split up. The whole album, with the
exception of the eighth track, is dreadfully samey
and unexciting.
Track eight however, “Ctrl Alt Retreat,”
is the only one with some real promise. It's not
so pop punk and opens with a really nice vocal
and guitar sequence. Really quite beautiful. Through
the chorus there's a riff that's oh so very Brand
New “Deja Entendu” and all in all
the song ticks my boxes. Everything is working
together and that's the problem elsewhere in the
album. The vocals are too weak or the tone isn't
right or the poppy pace is just off-putting. But
here, there is a spark. Alas, the spark was entinguished
in the flood of crap.
To clarify, when I say “crap” and
“rubbish,” I simply mean it is wonderfully
unexciting. It's well recorded, and in the most
part tuneful, but you could put it on and forget
about it. Bland. Mm.
