“Mechanical Lions” opens with a beautiful
string track, and when the
guitar finally starts it's the making of an epic
song. And everything
takes a pop-emo-punk-thing turn and the dream is
shattered – however,
it's still very good - as good as pop-emo-punk-thing
can ever be. It
starts with semi rap/sing affair and switches between
quiet whimpy
breathy and heavier raar. I suppose they're a My
Chemical Romance for
people over the age of sixteen. Which isn't so bad
– I'm quite thankful.
But maybe I'm just being sucked in by the lingering
strings track into
thinking these guys are maturer than they actually
are? What will the
next five tracks offer?
Well, first up, forget that My Chemical Romance
bollocks – these guys
are way above that. “Guinea Pig Syndrome”
takes a heavier less poppy
approach, “Blindly Apparent” more
of a rocking Gym Class Heroes. There
are some really nice musical twists through this
EP, and not in the
generic predictable ways. The EP closes with “You
Got What You Deserved”
and “Bitin' Nails And Watchin' Clocks,”
which are both fantastic tracks,
and I'm surprised to announce at the end of this,
that this is, genres
aside, a brilliant EP.
4.5/5
