Cosmo Jarvis has had some tracks reviewed here before.
They didn't fair
too well. “Cheesey” was a recurring
criticism, and so when faced with a
double album (brave move, sir,) I wasn't too excited,
to say the least.
And interestingly, the only track I did enjoy from
past experience,
isn't on either disk.
Firstly, Humasyouhitch, disk one. Opens with “You
Got Your Head.”
Immediately I'm questioning my initial dislike
because, this certainly
isn't as bad as I was expecting. It's upbeat,
catchy, and yeah it's a
little corny in places but so is a lot of stuff
these days. However, the
song that followed is one that I hated - “Mel's
Song” is crude and oh so
Jamie T without the catchiness. And I despise
Jamie T. Next up was a
single “She's Got You,” which is less
chatty Jamie T and a bit more
musical. Catchy. Yes. This is better. But it's
got the rhythm of those
guys that stand in town selling pan pipe CDs.
Basically, it's just not
grabbing me. At all. It's really average. I know
this chap is trying to
be upbeat and quirky and all that, but the album
on the whole (and we
haven't even made it to the second disk,) is something
you could only
listen to once without wanting to break something.
It's a bit of a nishe
market really, the kind of thing that would appeal
to a fifteen year old
but not a sixteen year old. Killer. So to sum
this disk up, cheesey
upbeat pop-rock nonsense with irritatingly tactless
lyrics and something
that fills you with an overwhelming urge to put
something else on.
Sonofabitch, the second disk. Once again, the
disk opens with the most
promising track. “Clean My Room” is
actually not half bad, with a funky
acoustic guitar and a nod-along rhythm. The lyrics
aren't as noticable
and yeah I actually really like this. Good work
Jarvis. But with the
exception of a couple of tracks, this disk is
far superior to the first.
By a long shot. There are more acoustic tracks
and it generally
expresses a more serious tuneful approach instead
of a jack-the-lad
wanker approach. “Gone, Like You”
is another really strong track. But
alas, it's a double CD and I can't rate each one
independantly, as much
as I wish I could. And thus, the first disk pulls
this review down. I'd
say Sonofabitch is worth a listen though –
if you can handle the average
track length working out somewhere between five
or six minutes.
3/5
