Roxy Swain are a five piece band from Chicago which
are made up of Roxy Swain on vocals, Tom Valenzano
on guitar and vocals, Matt Walters on guitar, Melissa
Kempfer on bass and Chuck Harling on drums they
have been together for just under a year as a band
and have just released their debut EP ‘New
Love Designers’.
The EP opens with ‘Without Without’
and the song is cracking from the opening guitar
line, to the opening softly spoken vocals from
Roxy right up until Roxy finishes singing her
heart out at the end of the track.
‘Linda’ is a big indie rock track
where the bass lines are bouncy, the guitar are
huge and Roxy’s vocals are strong coming
along in a slight punky manner really giving the
song some get up and go.
In my opinion ‘Duo Jet’ is a song
that really shouldn’t of happened, it features
‘Tom Valenzano’ on lead vocals and
his vocals give the band a bit of a country music
feel and I have never ever been able to cope with
country music and that is still the case.
‘Spread Eagle’ finishes the EP and
it features Tom Valenzano on vocals again, but
this time around he really shines as the song
is instrumentally really heavy for this style
of music and vocally Tom has gone down the Radiohead
style depression route and it works well.
What really strikes me about Roxy Swain as a
band is how powerful Roxy’s vocals are but
what I don’t understand is why Roxy sings
on the first two tracks and then Tom takes over
for the next two tracks, it kind of ruins the
happy mood the opening of the album gets you into
and leaves me wondering why Roxy Swain doesn’t
go solo as with a voice as good as that she is
bound to do well, but as a band playing small
pub venues on a Sunday night is as far as I can
see them getting.
