Hope And State are a recently formed band from London
and they have just released their debut EP ‘Grand
Gestures’, the EP features 4 tracks and it
is all big and fast sounding and just a sterling
debut offering.
The EP opens with ‘London, Oh London’,
a song which oozes in big instrumental noise and
melodic vocals, the drumming is proper spot on
with Edward Wrede smacking the crap out of his
kick whilst creating massive sounds, the guitar
riffs are fast and furious and the general feel
of the song is kick arse and the infectious melodies
will soon get inside your head.
‘At The Sight Of You’ is a poppy-punk
track, the song flows at a nice pace but it doesn’t
have the get up and go of other poppy-punk tracks.
‘The Ever True’ more than makes up
for the lack of get up and go of the previous
track as it is a big catchy sing-a-long affair
that sounds more American that it does English
and really gets you bopping along.
The title track ‘Grand Gestures’
closes the EP and it is a big progressive rock
song which shows off how big and tight sounding
the Hope And State can be as a band, the song
is defiantly the highlight of the EP.
Overall ‘Grand Gestures’ is a great
debut release from Hope And State you can tell
a lot of time and effort has gone into creating
the EP, the only thing that confuses me is that
a couple of the songs sound like progressive rock
whilst the others are poppy-punk and it confuses
me as to which direction Hope And State really
want to head in.
4/5
