Converge - Axe To FallConverge – Axe To Fall

The extreme metal band that is Converge have been together since 1990 and during the time the band have been together I have never once heard their music until now with the release of their seventh studio album ‘Axe To Fall’ and I have to say at first I was extremely shocked by just how loud, vicious and heavy Converge are and once the initial headache disappeared I found enjoyment in ‘Axe To Fall’.

‘Axe To Fall’ is a proper ball breaker of an album, it features 13 tracks which all have a big aggressive sound to them, the guitar riffs are fast paced and come across more aggressive than if Charles Manson was chasing you down your drive with a knife or baseball bat, the bass lines are proper beefy whilst the vocals are a mix of raw screams and fast flowing shouts, either way you will never be able to make out the lyrics whilst listen to the album which is why it is a good point that the lyrics are covered within the album booklet.

I have the understanding that Converge are the kings of extreme metal and if I am wrong and they are not, then they really should be as ‘Axe To Fall’ is the most extreme album I have heard or year and quite possible ever even more extreme that the odd Berserker song I have listened to in the past.

The album starts with ‘Dark Horse’, a song that is driven by death defying riffs and menacing growls, it sets the pace for the album which is matched perfectly for the next 40 odd minutes. The guitar work throughout the album can’t be faulted as it is outstanding to hear such brutal sound and force coming from. ‘Reap What You Sow’ is the perfect carry on song from ‘Dark Horse’ and it equally matches the pace with its nifty guitar work and mad vocals.

The only downside that I can find within ‘Axe To Fall’ is that the album sounds to samey throughout and in places it does sound like a big bundle of noise but saying that, there is way more good points about the album from the razor sharp riffs right down to the super charged production.

If you like music by The Dillinger Escape Plan then should love ‘Axe To Fall’ from Converge and if your Slayer and Slipknot albums aren’t giving you that heavy kick anymore then brave it and give ‘Axe To Fall’ a listen.
