Some of you may be thinking ‘This City? Where
have I heard of them before?’ – Well,
here’s your answer: This City were one of
the groups who qualified for the latter stages of
2007’s Orange Unsigned Act, whose victors
were Envy and other Sins, ‘who?’ I hear
you ask, and to be frank, I don’t know either.
To cut a long story short This City withdrew themselves
from the competition, and two years on have released
their debut album ‘We Were Like Sharks’.
Opening track ‘We Move’ perfectly
sets the pace of the album, and the remaining
songs have no trouble in keeping up with their
predecessor. ‘We Were Like Sharks’
is laced with At The Drive-In styled vocals, post-hardcore
guitars and Lostprophets-esque anthems. Tracks
such as ‘Colours’ and ‘Kids
With Fireworks’ keep the tempo upbeat, even
though the album is drawing ever closer to an
unwelcome end. And whilst a lot of the tracks
from this album have been knocking around for
a while they still sound fresh, ‘We Were
Like Sharks’ is an excellent showcase of
the lengths that This City could go to.
‘We Were Like Sharks’ is consistent
throughout, if a little bit confusing to get your
head around at times. This City are no one trick
ponies when it comes to experimenting with different
genres. This album is a hybrid of punk laced post-hardcore,
indie fun. And it’s simply that, fun.
Energy and youthfulness is something that This
City have in abundance, and whilst this album
is an excellent example of just what they are
capable of becoming, it is live where everything
perfectly slots together. This City tour with
A throughout November and December, and it’s
a given that they will acquire many new fans along
the way.
