Lucidfly are a female fronted four piece alternative
rock band who hail from Orlando Florida, they formed
back in 2005 and have been causing a stir in their
local music scene ever since, they released ‘Adapting
To Gravity’ their debut 7 track EP back in
2005 and are now back with their second EP ‘The
Escape Stage’ which features 5 brand new tracks.
These days there really aren’t enough female
fronted rock bands, and the majority of the one’s
out there really don’t do anything for me
except for Flyleaf and Evanescence who are both
talented bands in their own unique ways, well
now I can add Lucidfly to that small but good
list as their new EP ‘The Escape Stage’
is one of those records that are so easy to get
into and leaves you wanting to hear more.
The first thing that stands out about Lucidfly’s
music is front lady Nikki Layne’s sweet
powerful and clear lead vocals that are delivered
with such high emotion, the overall tempo of the
music also stands out in the way that for the
majority of the time it is upbeat whilst featuring
some beefy guitar riffs from Doug Mecca, the drumming
from Aaron Ficca also packs an impressive punch
whist Go Nakabayashi knocks out some great bass
lines which add some bounce to the tracks.
All the songs throughout ‘The Escape Stage’
are anthemic progressive rock anthems, the song’s
build up in such an uplifting way, take the opening
track ‘Dirge’ for example, the song
opens with some strong drums beats, followed by
massive guitar riffs and then seconds later Nikki
Layne’s beautiful vocals come in taking
you on a massive journey of girl power mixed with
proper chunky instrumental work from the men and
this is pretty much the formula for every song
on the EP and it is a winning formula which leaves
you with a massive smile on your face.
During ‘Dramatis Personae’ Nikki’s
vocals come along the best out of any other track
on the EP, she has such an powerful set of vocals
that really draw you into the song’s , and
if she has that effect on record it really does
make me wonder at how the massive sound of Lucidfly
comes across on the live circuit.
If you had to compare Lucidfly to any other bands
out there then you would get the standard comparisons
of Evanescence, Nightwish and Within Temptation
but only for the fact that Lucidfly are a female
fronted band with the rest of the band made up
of males, granted Nikki Layne’s vocals do
come across quite similar to those of Amy Lee
from Evanescence, but there is actually something
about Lucidfly which makes them stand out from
Evanescene and the other bands mentioned above.
At the moment in the UK Lucidfly are pretty much
unheard of but soon I think that is going to change
as they have a massive sound that the whole world
deserves to hear and it is only a matter of time
before they get invited to the UK to support a
mainstream American rock band.
I love Lucidfly and really hope they have plans
to record a full length album in the near future
as I really can’t wait to hear more from
them.
