Hero are a three piece rock band from Canada and
they are due to release their new album ‘Fires
Of Beltain’ in the UK on the 18th January
2010, yeah I do feel that I have been sent this
album majorly in advanced but you can’t fault
the guys for their advanced promotional ideas.
The first thing that strikes me about the album
is the epic artwork, the artwork is like a cartoon
artwork but it shows a massive battle between
monkeys, men and lions with everyone wearing their
armour and flames burning pretty much everything
in sight, the actual booklet that comes with the
album is massive, in fact it is so thick that
you will find it a struggle putting the booklet
back in the CD case once you have got it out,
the booklet features various different artwork
and lyrics for the 12 tracks featured on the album,
if I had to judge the album by the artwork then
I would think that the album is an epic progressive
rock album but after listening to the album I
now know that isn’t the case.
The album opens with ‘Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey’,
the song is an explosive introduction which features
massive guitar riffs and guitar solos and chant-a-long
group vocals of “Hey, hey, hey, hey”,
vocally the song reminds me of the now defunct
UK band Engerica but instrumentally sounds like
something you would hear on a Led Zeppelin album,
the song is the perfect introduction and also
the best song on the album as things start to
go downhill quite fast as the album goes on.
You can clearly see that Hero had a lot of fun
creating their new album, it sticks to their classic
rock roots but it is just to random and it seems
that the band were not serious when making the
album, take the closing track ‘New Day’
for example it sounds like Hero have turned into
a boy band and if I have to be honest the song
is just wrong and should never have been made.
The main problem with the album is that Hero
have decided to make an album where each of the
twelve tracks sound like they have been taking
from a total different genre of music from the
last and they don’t really fit together
as an album, just imagine going to a jumble sale
and buying all the crap that is on one table and
then trying to use all the items at the same time
for something, it would be impossible and not
work and this is exactly what has happened with
‘Fires Of Beltain’ as Hero have tried
to be cleaver and try a bit of everything but
as an full album it really doesn’t fit together.
They may be influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin,
Queen, Def Leppard etc but with music like this
I know Hero will not be following in these bands
footsteps.
