I have been looking forward the new album by Flood
Of Red for some time now and it has now finally
been released and I have to say that it is one beautiful
album, now I’m sure a lot of you are going
to think that I am weird or that I have issues as
I have just described the album as beautiful, but
it really is, it is so mellow and soothing sounding
with some of the best Scottish turned American vocals
that I have ever heard.
The best way to describe the sound of Flood Of
Red for someone who has never heard them is basically
the chilled near depressive sounds of Coldplay
mixed with the vocals of Circa Survive mixed in
with the technical side of Nine Inch Nails and
you will be pretty close to understanding the
sound of Flood Of Red, if you are still not sure
on the sound then I would just advise you to give
the album a listen as it’s a very pleasing
listen.
There are many great moments on ‘Leaving
Everything Behind’ from the chilling opening
vibes of ‘The Edge Of The World (Prelude)’
right through until the explosive instrumental
sounds of ‘The Edge Of The World’
yes I did mention the same track twice but I will
add they are two separate tracks that sound totally
different from each other, I also did say that
the end of the album is explosive, you didn’t
imagine it, Flood Of Red may well be a mellow
sounding band but they sure know how to make noise
when they want to.
Some of the strongest moments on the album happen
to be the bands singles ‘A Place Before
The End’ and ‘Home Run (1997)’,
with the earlier song being the better of the
two thanks to its chilling sound that builds up
over time with Jordan Spiers running the show
with his epic vocals.
If I had to guess what song Flood Of Red will
be releasing as a single next then my guess would
be ‘Paper Lungs’ as the song has a
big radio friendly feel and features leading drum
beats which really flow well throughout the whole
song whilst frontman Jordan Spiers keeps up with
his vocals of “Woaaah, woaaah” and
the repetitive groans of “sleeping tonight,
sleeping tonight”.
Instrumentally Flood Of Red are shit hot especially
Graham Griffith on drums, he has a knack to bash
his drums in a way that it creates a good noise
but still stays safely in the territories of the
bands mellow sound, equally Jordan Spiers is vocally
a legend with his beautiful uplifting yet mellow
vocals.
The only downside that I can see within the album
is that listening to the album all the way through
in one go can provide to be a mission as it tends
to get very repetitive and slightly boring in
places due to the general tone of the band but
all in all the album is pretty solid and is going
to help the band go places they haven’t
been before.
4/5
