Brand New’s debut album ‘Your Favourite
Weapon’ was pop-punk perfection. This album
was released in 2001, and in the eight years that
have followed, Brand New have become a completely
different band. It is no secret that they no longer
enjoy the so-called rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle
and frontman Jesse Lacey has publicly proclaimed
that “Brand New are dead.” But these
are facts that I don’t want to dwell on too
much.
Since 2001 Brand New have released a further
three albums, ‘Deja Entendu’, ‘The
Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me’ and
the latest offering ‘Daisy’. Each
has taken a further departure from its predecessor;
each has become a bigger “fuck you”
to the music industry, and, it could be argued,
to Brand New Fans.
Here I would like to be saying that ‘Daisy’
is Brand New’s finest hour, but that would
be a lie. Anyone hoping for a return of pop-punk
anthems such as ‘Jude Law And A Semester
Abroad’ or ‘Sic Transit…Glory
Fades’ will be sorely disappointed. The
album is often erratic, at parts migraine inducing,
and quite frankly a bit odd.
However, it might seem a bit mental saying this.
But Brand New don’t do bad albums, ‘Daisy’
is, by no stretch of the imagination, a masterpiece,
but it shouldn’t be thrown in the bin either.
As a Brand New fan you have to accept that the
likelihood of a return of summery pop-punk songs
is very slim, it would seem that those days are
well and truly over.
