Normally when you release a live album, you make
it obvious. This one doesn't. It was a shock. What
I was hoping was some kind of new album from the
Brute Chorus who have consistently disappointed
me. My last review indeed asked whether the rest
of the album was worth a listen, because it sounded
more promising than anything I'd heard before. And
instead of answering, I've got a live album to listen
to. A mix and match of a band who don't interest
me. But I'm really hoping, really really hoping,
that this changes.
Interestingly, it changed. I don't know what
it was. Maybe the selection of songs instead of
the odd one or two, maybe the live sound, and
the fact that they appear to play extremely well
live. No waivering notes, no, just, well just
right. So kudos for that, but somehow I find myself
gently warming to the scrappy sound of The Brute
Chorus.
Hercules opens and instantly grabs you with its
bizaareness, and offers a promising opening to
an up and down album. There are still certainly
things about the band that still don't tickle
my pickle – but when they resort to some
nice, trashy, disjointed indie, that's when it
has my full attention. There's still a bit of
weirdness which I haven't quite figured out yet,
in a kind of redneck way. It's a very, how shall
I say, 'local' album.
The real winners for me are All The Pilgrims,
She Was Always Cool (despite previously reviewing
the single and disliking it,) and the already-mentioned
Hercules.
As far as live albums go, excellent. The fans
will be pleased. As for getting into the Brute
Chorus, who knows. Surprise yourself. I did.
