Aside from the fact it sounds like it was recorded
in a lounge, and mixed by an A-Level student, Black
Gold has a fairly decent album here. It's not as
bad as I'd feared when iTunes' music database returned
'pop' as the genre.
As it turns out, Black Gold have a lot more to
offer than just pop. It's certainly jumped up,
but in a slightly indie, often electro way. A
much rockier feel eminates from the vocals, and
the messy tangle of mid-tones in the sound. The
vocals just aren't poppy enough for this to be
pop. If you imagine Editors removed their monotnous
lead and replaced him with a trio of indie dream-pop
boys, then you can start to get your head around
the opening track Detroit, whereas the following
track Plans & Reveries oozes the structure
and piano styles of Australia's Eskimo Joe.
What You Did is another rocky one, with a really
filthy mess at the hub of it. Gritty. Mm.
It is, essentially, just an all-round winner.
Certain tracks will appeal to different people,
and I'm sure everyone will have something good
to say about many of them. Just straight forward
music, no problems, no issues, just the good shit.
And with Boxer Rebellion-like vocals, you just
can't go wrong.
4.5/5
